Roof cleaning

Soft washed, so what comes off is the algae and not the shingle.

Those black streaks down a roof are not dirt. They are gloeocapsa magma, an algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingle and holds moisture against the roof while it does it. Left alone it shortens the life of the roof; scrubbed off with pressure, so does the granule layer that protects it.

That is why roofs are soft washed using low pressure and a specialized cleaning solution that kills the algae at its source. The streaks lift without anything being blasted off the shingle. This is not simply a preference. Most asphalt shingle manufacturers recommend against pressure washing because it can damage the shingles and may affect the warranty.

Anything that runs off the roof ends up in the landscaping below, so plants and surrounding areas are thoroughly watered before treatment and rinsed again afterward to protect them throughout the cleaning process.
